Following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that Trump's global tariffs were illegal, California Governor Gavin Newsom urged Trump to return the tariffs, with interest, to businesses and families. In a statement, Newsom said, "It's time to face the consequences, Donald," adding that the tariffs were an illegal money-making scheme that drove up prices, harmed working families, and that Trump was using them to damage long-standing alliances and extort money from them. The Supreme Court did not rule on how to handle the refund requests, leaving the decision to lower courts. If all requests are granted, the refunds could amount to as much as $170 billion, more than half of the tariff revenue.
