Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division, will be leaving the company after 38 years, as the Xbox business faces increasing challenges. In an internal memo released Friday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that Spencer had decided to retire last year and that succession planning had been underway. Nadella also thanked Spencer for his outstanding leadership and support throughout the company's journey. In the December quarter, Microsoft's gaming revenue declined by approximately 10% year-over-year, exceeding company expectations, while total revenue grew by nearly 17% during the same period. In January, Microsoft announced an undisclosed impairment loss on its gaming business. Asha Sharma, who will join Microsoft from Instacart in 2024, will succeed Spencer as CEO of the gaming division, reporting directly to Nadella.
