On February 20, local time, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Pacific Power Company (PGC) agreed to pay $575 million to settle a U.S. government claim for damages caused by six wildfires in California and Oregon. The settlement resolves the U.S. government’s allegations that PGC’s negligence in its power transmission lines caused the six fires. The settlement will be used to repay the huge costs incurred by the U.S. government in fighting the fires and will also be allocated to the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management for the restoration of 290,000 acres of public land that were burned.
