The Pentagon has issued three statements supporting the war against Iran, exacerbating the internal divisions within the MAGA camp.

2026-03-06 14:52:41

President Trump expended considerable political capital to secure Hergasses's narrow Senate confirmation as Secretary of Defense. Despite Hergasses's controversial personal life, lack of experience, and numerous past issues, Trump heavily relied on the distinctive former Fox News host as his primary spokesperson to promote the war on Iran to the public and MAGA supporters.

Hergész has recently made frequent appearances at Pentagon press conferences, strongly defending the president while attempting to alleviate public concerns about an "endless war." However, this strategy has not completely quelled criticism, especially from growing doubts within Trump's traditional support base. This article will analyze in detail Hergész's changing role, his performance in war propaganda, and the resulting internal party and societal divisions.

Hegsays' nomination was fraught with difficulties, but Trump gave his full support.

In the initial months following Trump's victory in the 2024 election, Hergace became one of the most controversial nominees in his cabinet. He faced questions at his confirmation hearings regarding his inexperience, controversial views on women in the military, and numerous personal issues, ultimately passing by a narrow margin. Hergace's service as a National Guard member in Iraq and Afghanistan added to his combat experience, but his past also included unintentionally leaking sensitive operational information, internal team dismissals, misjudging his stance on Ukraine and NATO, and facing war crimes charges related to US military operations in the Caribbean (which he denies). These controversies initially made the nomination process uncertain, but Trump persisted, viewing her as a loyal ally.

Today, these experiences, once considered weaknesses, have become a defining characteristic of Hegses' "MAGA" identity, making him an ideal public spokesperson for Trump in the Iran war. Trump chose Hegses precisely because of his expressiveness on television and his affinity for conservative voters.

The Pentagon has been frequently appearing at press conferences to strongly refute accusations of "endless war."

Hegses has not held a Pentagon press conference in nearly nine months since taking office, but he has taken the stage three times this week to defend Trump’s Iran policy.

He stated bluntly at a press conference on Monday: "To those media outlets and political leftists who are chanting 'endless war,' I say—shut up. This is not Iraq; it won't be endless." He added that he had personally experienced both wars, and his generation knows this better than anyone else, including the president. Hegeseth emphasized that the operation was targeted and precise, not involving regime change or national reconstruction, but rather aimed at destroying Iranian missile bases, naval facilities, and other threatening infrastructure.

On Wednesday, he further declared: "The United States is winning decisively, devastatingly, and ruthlessly. We have achieved incredible, historic results in just four days. Only the United States of America could lead such an operation, only us." These statements were intended to reassure a weary public and a growing number of MAGA skeptics, emphasizing that the war was limited, controllable, and would not repeat the mistakes of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Media arrangements highlight political bias; traditional mainstream media are restricted.

Hergés's press conference was not a traditional open and interactive event.

Media outlets friendly to Trump were seated in the first two rows, while journalists from major mainstream media outlets were relegated to the back and given almost no opportunity to ask questions. During the press conference, a reporter from a favored website was allowed to ask what Hegses prayed for the soldiers in danger.

This arrangement reflects Hegsays' selective strategy in information dissemination, focusing more on reinforcing the positive narrative to supporters rather than fully responding to criticisms.

Internal rifts have emerged within the MAGA camp, with several right-wing figures publicly criticizing it.

Despite Hegsays' efforts to endorse the war, criticism has not subsided, much of it coming from Trump's reliable "MAGA" base.

Right-wing figures Kelly, Walsh, Carlson, and Prince have all expressed their dissatisfaction with the war. Far-right influencer Fuentes called it a "complete betrayal," while Jones stated, "This is horrible. I cannot condone the cover-up of Epstein, I cannot condone World War III." Jones emphasized his stance when referring to the Epstein investigation.

Even Republican lawmakers have issued warnings. Tennessee Representative Burchett said Tuesday that MAGA voters should be concerned the campaign could turn into "another endless war." When asked what he would say to MAGA supporters, Burchett said, "Stay concerned, stay vigilant. Urge us to deliver on our promises, and keep an eye on us on this issue."

Experts question the ambiguity of the strategic objectives; Hegsays' role goes beyond mere propaganda.

Critics point out that while Hegsays articulated purely military objectives, he failed to clearly explain the government’s ultimate strategic intentions.

"I haven't seen the minister provide a convincing explanation of the ultimate goal, and I think that's a major missing piece in this administration's communication with the public on this issue," said Maloney of the Brookings Institution.

Senior defense officials revealed that Hegses' role extends far beyond his public image. As a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, he sees deep involvement in the new conflict as a mission.

He stated on Monday, "Our generation of veterans remembers the names of our brothers who never returned home, slaughtered by Iranian-backed roadside bombs and well-equipped militias. This war was not started by us, but under President Trump's leadership, we will end it." Privately, Hegsays orchestrated the attack on Iran, becoming Trump's primary communication channel with civilian and military leaders at the Department of Defense, conveying the president's intentions to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Pentagon civilians, and Admiral Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command.

Since the U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear missile facilities last June, Hegseth has been deeply involved in the planning. He holds regular group meetings with Trump, Secretary of State Rubio, and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, and coordinates operations in the Oval Office. Although he is often perceived as focusing on cultural issues or fitness, he actually avoids micromanaging military details, delegating battlefield strategy to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Kane.

Montana Republican Senator Hee, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a former Navy SEAL, said: "Heghese did an excellent job of empowering General Kane as a battlefield strategist. He was a hands-on leader who went deep into the troops and deep into the supply chain."

Trump values public performance most; war narrative is key.

Trump's primary concern remains Hegses' public image. Through frequent media appearances, Hegses attempts to instill a sense of resolve and victory in the Iran operation, while simultaneously alleviating domestic fatigue with the ongoing overseas entanglements. However, this strategy faces severe challenges given the split within the MAGA camp, limited support from Republican lawmakers, and a lack of clear strategic objectives.

The course of a war depends not only on the battlefield, but also on whether domestic political consensus can be maintained.

In conclusion , Hegses' transformation from a controversial nominee to a key figure in the Iran war reflects Trump's emphasis on loyalty and media influence. Despite Hegses' strong defense and emphasis on "not an endless war," internal criticism and strategic questions within MAGA remain unresolved. Public support for this conflict will directly impact the stability of the Trump administration and its prospects in the midterm elections. Every statement Hegses makes in the coming weeks could be a crucial turning point in determining the direction of the war narrative.
