[Arrest Warrant for Philippine Senator Sparks Riots in Senate] On the evening of May 13, Philippine law enforcement and military personnel entered the Senate building. Video footage taken by reporters inside the building shows gunshots rang out, and the crowd panicked. The Senate building was placed under lockdown. Reports indicate that National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents attempted to enter and arrest Senator Ronald de la Rosa, former National Police Chief, and opened fire during their retreat. Senate President Cayetano stated that the Senate was "under suspected attack." Interior Secretary Remilla arrived at the Senate but stated he was "not there to arrest de la Rosa," but rather to "ensure the safety of the senators." NBI Director Mativagué stated that law enforcement officers had been ordered to suspend their operations and remain on standby, and no arrests were being carried out. According to Philippine media reports, President Marcos stated that "no order to arrest de la Rosa was issued," and that "it is unclear who attempted to storm the Senate; the truth will be investigated." The 64-year-old de la Rosa was a key figure in the anti-drug campaign during former President Duterte's administration and is considered a major political ally of Duterte. The International Criminal Court issued a statement on May 11, revealing the arrest warrant secretly issued last November for Dela Rosa on charges of "crimes against humanity."
