Could the Putin-Zeit summit become a reality? Putin discusses ceasefire terms; oil prices may give back their geopolitical premium.

2026-06-05 14:02:31

Russian President Vladimir Putin told foreign media at the annual Russian economic forum in St. Petersburg on Thursday (June 4) that the Russian army is still advancing on the battlefield every day.

He emphasized that the war could end if Ukraine is willing to compromise and accept the peace plan proposed by US President Trump.

Although the situation in the Middle East is currently the dominant variable for oil prices, a substantial easing of the Russia-Ukraine conflict (such as a leaders' meeting or progress in ceasefire negotiations) could weaken the global geopolitical risk premium and put downward pressure on oil prices.

Currently, WTI crude is around $93 and Brent crude is around $95, both of which already include a premium for the risk of conflict between Russia and Ukraine. If the Putin-Zeit meeting takes place and negotiations progress, oil prices may give back this premium.

Zelensky proposed a meeting, and Trump expressed his support.

Zelenskyy published an open letter proposing a meeting with Putin in a third country, such as Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab nation, to agree on an end to the war. He proposed a phased negotiation plan: first, direct consultations between Ukraine and Russia, followed by the participation of the United States and Europe as security guarantors, and expressed his willingness to implement a comprehensive ceasefire and a "full for all" prisoner exchange during the negotiations. Zelenskyy also warned that if Putin is unwilling to end the war, Ukraine will continue fighting.

Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that the Kremlin has seen Zelensky's open letter and will later report it to Putin, adding that "he is welcome to come to Moscow for talks at any time." Trump, speaking at the White House, said a meeting between the two leaders would be "ideal," attributing it largely to US pressure, and emphasized that both Russia and Ukraine need to make compromises.

Despite Zelensky's proposal for a meeting, Putin maintained a hardline stance, demanding that Ukraine accept the Trump plan and make concessions, including relinquishing the remaining Donbas region. Zelensky responded that the real decision rested with Putin. With core differences remaining unresolved, the feasibility of a summit between the two leaders remains highly uncertain.

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at a White House event on the 4th that a meeting between the two leaders would be "ideal." When asked about Zelensky's public letter, Trump said he was pleased to see the two leaders seemingly discussing a meeting, adding, "This is largely thanks to our efforts." "If they could meet, that would be a very good thing," Trump said. "They really should make it happen."

Trump also stated that both Russia and Ukraine would make compromises to end the conflict, as "I suggested," but he declined to provide further details.

Putin claimed that the Russian military has an advantage in manpower, resources, and willpower.

Putin stated that Russia has an advantage in manpower, industrial resources, and willpower, and that the Russian army "recently" drove Ukrainian forces out of nearly 2,500 square kilometers of territory. He also made a rare admission that Russia needs to strengthen its air defense capabilities to counter the growing threat of Ukrainian drones—the Ukrainian military has significantly improved its drone combat capabilities in recent years, frequently attacking targets behind Russian lines.

Western and Ukrainian military analysts believe that the Russian military's advance has slowed significantly and is still far from achieving its objectives. Putin, however, countered that the offensive is continuing and stated that Russia has completely controlled the Luhansk region, more than 85% of the Donetsk region, and approximately 80% of the Zaporizhzhia region, implying that it may have complete control of Donetsk within the next few months.

Donbas's concessions demanded that Ukraine relinquish more territory.

Putin stated that under the current circumstances, Ukraine hopes Russia will halt its advance, but rather than a ceasefire, it would be better to accept the compromise previously discussed in Anchorage, Alaska, to end the war completely.

Analysts say this statement means that Moscow still demands Ukraine relinquish the rest of the Donbas region.

Zelenskyy previously stated that this move would affect the fate of hundreds of thousands of people and make Ukraine more vulnerable to further attacks.

Putin said Ukraine must make concessions and that the EU could exert influence to persuade Kyiv.

In his open letter, Zelensky stated that it was Putin who truly needed to make the decision to end the war, and that the Russian people were tired of attacks, inflation, and fuel shortages and were ready to accept peace.

Reaffirming diplomatic willingness: willing to base on the Anchorage plan

Putin reiterated that Russia is prepared to reach an agreement through diplomatic channels to end the nearly five-year-long conflict. He stated that the proposed solution is based on discussions he had with Trump during their meeting in Anchorage.

The Anchorage Plan refers to the framework of understanding reached between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump during their meeting in Anchorage, Alaska on August 15, 2025, regarding ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The core points of the plan include: territorially, it demands that Ukraine transfer the entire Donbas region (Luhansk and Donetsk) to Russian control and freeze the current front lines; regarding Ukraine's status, it demands the restoration of its non-aligned, neutral, and non-nuclear status and its abandonment of NATO membership; and regarding security and rights, it demands the elimination of security threats to Russia and the guarantee of the rights of Russian-speaking residents.

Putin emphasized that Ukraine must accept the same conditions as Russia for an agreement to be established. He implied that Russia had already made some compromises, and now it was Kyiv's turn to show sincerity, adding that "there is no other way."

Analysts point out that with fundamental differences remaining between the two sides' core demands, the prospects for a diplomatic solution remain bleak.
