[US Power Grid and AI Demand Gap: 70 GW Shortage Calculated by Institutions] ⑴ On the surface, the US power grid just experienced one of its best months in a decade. According to data from the US Energy Information Administration compiled by Goldman Sachs' Utilities team, US power generation capacity increased by 5.6 GW in September, the strongest September in at least 10 years, nearly four times the historical average of 1.5 GW. ⑵ However, in the same week, Morgan Stanley's Stephen Byrd calculated that US data center developers will face a 70 GW power shortage by 2028. This figure does not yet include all available turbines, fuel cells, etc. ⑶ Even if all these resources are included, the shortage is still 43 GW, equivalent to 38% of the total electricity needed by AI developers. ⑷ The two sets of data present a stark contrast, showing that while US power generation capacity is increasing, the expansion of electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence is even faster, and power grid construction is still significantly lagging behind.
