[The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway, is under unilateral Iranian control, leading to an 81-day bloody redrawing of the global shipping landscape] ⑴ Lloyd's Register maritime data shows that of the 27 large merchant ships (over 10,000 tons) that have transited the Strait of Hormuz since April 13, approximately 15 strictly adhered to the near-shore routes designated by Iran. This route runs close to the Iranian coastline and was mandated by Iranian authorities to shipowners earlier this month. ⑵ The structural vacuum exposed by the data is shocking: not a single vessel used traditional international shipping lanes; the remaining ships traveled to and from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, which directly controls the strait. The de facto jurisdiction over the world's most important energy transport hub has fundamentally shifted. ⑶ Fleet connectivity indicators reveal deeper dependencies: 81% of the ships transiting the strait since April are directly or indirectly linked to Iran through factors such as place of registry, flag of origin, and Iranian port calls. This grey fleet constitutes the current mainstay of shipping. (4) On April 13, the U.S. Central Command launched a blockade of Iranian ports, claiming to have intercepted and driven away 10 ships attempting to break through the blockade. No ships have yet successfully breached the blockade, and the tension between military deterrence and actual navigation continues to escalate. (5) Since the joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes began at the end of February, Iran immediately announced the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The average daily number of ships passing through the Strait plummeted from approximately 130 before the war to less than 10%, and the more than 80-day shipping disruption has profoundly reshaped the global energy logistics topology. (6) An Iranian-affiliated oil tanker, RHN, sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department, entered the Persian Gulf on Wednesday. Shipping data released on Thursday showed that the vessel was sailing near Iranian shores without declaring its destination. Senior ship tracking analyst Diakun confirmed that ships are still moving daily, but the vast majority are affiliated with Iran, suggesting that the sanctions red line is being systematically tested and eroded.
