US stocks face extreme pressure again: warnings from Venezuela to Greenland

2026-01-19 15:34:32

Greenland, the world's largest island, has recently been thrust into the eye of the storm of geopolitical competition once again—US President Trump's high-profile "takeover" signals over the past year have made this land, which is under the semi-autonomous framework of the Kingdom of Denmark, a touchstone for testing the global rules-based order.

Behind this sovereignty dispute lies not only a blatant provocation against the self-determination rights of Greenland's 57,000 people, but also a wake-up call to the world: compromise with hegemonism must come to an end.

In an effort to force Europe to accept the US's demands, even at the cost of launching a new round of tariff wars against European and American countries, a spokesperson for the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong statement of opposition.

A clear stance: Denmark and Greenland share a common commitment.

The spokesperson for foreign affairs of the left-wing party in the Danish Parliament, Terlin Pertu Mach, stated that it must be made clear that our concern is not about the continued existence of "Danish jurisdiction," but rather the core right of Greenlanders to autonomously plan their national development and choose their diplomatic alliances.

Denmark, once Greenland's colonial power, now bears a dual responsibility: to confront its historical guilt and to help Greenland build a localized democratic governance structure, cultivate a sustainable economic model, and clarify its blueprint for sovereign development.

Against this backdrop, Denmark and Greenland formed a strategic community to jointly resist the aggressive expansion of external forces. This was both a moral imperative and an inevitable choice to safeguard their own sovereignty.

The essence of hegemony: the logic of expansion from Venezuela to Greenland

Maher said that Trump's ambition to seize Greenland was by no means an isolated incident.

Looking back at the government's intervention in Venezuela, its disregard for international law and the principle of sovereign equality of states has been fully exposed.

The power farce unfolding in Caracas is essentially a demonstration of hegemony: as long as one possesses hard power, one can include other countries in the "backyard control" list and arbitrarily dominate and manipulate them.

What is even more alarming is that even if the Maduro regime in Venezuela is controversial in its governance, it should never become a legitimate excuse for unilateral sanctions and intervention by the United States. Those forces that applaud such illegal acts are actually undermining the cornerstone of the global rules-based order and indirectly encouraging powerful forces to replicate predatory expansion—Greenland is very likely to become the next target.

Maher added that the core pillars of the traditional international order we are familiar with are the use of a legal framework to check and balance power, guarantee the equality of sovereign states, and protect the rights of people from oppression.

However, the reality is that Western countries have long adhered to double standards in the enforcement of rules, with Israel's colonial expansion and genocide in Palestine being the most vivid example.

The latest U.S. National Security Strategy openly reveals its hegemonic ambitions, claiming the right to use overwhelming political, economic, and military resources globally.

Trump's high-profile invocation of the "Truman Doctrine" at a Mar-a-Lago press conference, outlining a diplomatic framework to suppress all challengers, is enough to make Greenland, and indeed all economies within the "sphere of interest" of a superpower, highly vigilant against escalating geopolitical risks.

The essence of the logic of hegemony is the jungle law that "might makes right".

Those forces harboring imperial ambitions demonstrate their status by plundering territory and resources. Their ability to act recklessly stems not only from their hard power advantage but also from the tacit approval of the international community.

If this logic is not curbed, it will ultimately lead to the collapse of the global rule of law, and the economic security and well-being of people in small and medium-sized countries will face continuous threats.

Greenland's Choice: Reject Subservience, Uphold Independence

Maher stated that Greenland has never yielded, and that Greenland is no longer a colony to be manipulated. It has established a sound democratic governance system, possesses a legitimate autonomous government and parliament, and its sovereignty claims have a full legal and popular basis.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederic Nilsson made a resounding statement: "If we had to choose between the United States and Denmark at this moment, our answer would be Denmark."

Behind this choice lies a clear trade-off of interests—Greenlanders enjoy universal healthcare and free higher education, which are precisely the welfare benefits that the United States has failed to provide; more importantly, the United States' poor record in protecting the rights of indigenous people has long made Greenlanders see the true face of hegemony.

The way to break the deadlock: Building strategic autonomy and resisting hegemonic coercion

Even so, given Trump's style of doing things, he will most likely still use a combination of military deterrence, political isolation, and economic pressure to insist on pursuing his ambitions for Greenland.

Mach stated that the current security situation between Europe and Greenland has long passed the critical point of strategic compromise, and any attempt to appease them would be tantamount to seeking favors with a tiger.

Therefore, the Kingdom of Denmark, the Nordic countries, and all economies that value the rule-based order must reconstruct their strategic thinking and elevate the building of strategic autonomy and the breaking free from path dependence on the United States to the level of core national strategies.

This means firmly ceasing the purchase of American weapons and equipment and abandoning the path dependence on American-made fighter jets; it means severing intelligence cooperation links with the United States, building an internet and media system independent of American technology giants, and preventing these platforms from becoming political tools of hegemony; and it also means upholding the bottom line of the domestic democratic system and not giving hegemonic forces any opportunity to take advantage of it.

The Great Game of the Times: A Joint Struggle to Defend Rules and the Right to Self-Determination

The sovereignty dispute over Greenland is far more than just a battle over the ownership of a single island; it is a contemporary struggle to defend international rules and the right to self-determination.

Mach called on progressive forces in Europe and around the world to build consensus, form a united front, and jointly resist the imperial ambitions and neo-colonial schemes of the United States and other major powers.

Only when political decision-makers in all countries abandon appeasement and steadfastly defend the authority of international law and the purposes of the UN Charter can hegemonism have nowhere to hide and the sovereignty of every country and the right of its people to self-determination be truly respected and protected.
