[EU Plans to Extend Carbon Pricing to Departing Flights; European Airlines Could Face Over €1.5 Billion in Additional Costs Annually] ⑴ According to an analysis of a proposal aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions, if the EU extends its carbon pricing mechanism to all departing flights, each of Europe's major airlines will incur at least an additional €1.5 billion in costs. ⑵ Previous reports indicated that the EU is revising its Emissions Trading System (ETS), which supports the decarbonization of European industries, considering expanding its coverage to flights departing from the EU. ⑶ This move could further increase the cost burden on airlines—which are already facing multiple challenges, including high jet fuel prices—and could also exacerbate trade tensions with the United States. ⑷ Transition Metrics predicts that Lufthansa, International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, and Air France-KLM will be the hardest hit: by 2027, the additional costs for the three airlines will reach €1.8 billion, €1.7 billion, and €1.5 billion respectively, with each airline's total costs exceeding €2 billion. (5) Calculations show that the above costs are equivalent to 44% of Lufthansa's 2025 profits, 23% of IAL Group's profits, and 30% of Air France-KLM's profits.
